Westlake Season Review

Posted Wednesday, January 03, 2007 by Richard Holzer

This past season was one of great success. The Wolverines, despite graduating 4 seniors who signed Division 1A scholarships, posted a record of 9-2 and made the Play- offs for the 4th consecutive year. The year was also marked by spectacular play by underclassmen, which leaves Westlake with a bright future to look forward to.

The offense, led by QB Darrin Moore, posted record point totals this year (67 points in one game against Great Mills). The offense was keyed by a potent ground game which led the SMAC in most statistical rushing categories this season. Runningbacks Albert Hanks (the teams leading rusher with 1034yds & 2nd Team All- State), Jesse Mitchell (407yds), Greg Walker (602yds), & Kenard Harris (513yds) gave opposing defenses fits all year. The passing game was very timely coming up with big plays all year. Darrin Moore hit 8 different receivers this year (for 741yds) & connected on 8 TDs this year.

The defense, led by senior captain AJ Gross, shut opponents down all year. The defense allowed 8 points per game this, while posting 3 shut outs. The defensive line terrorized opposing teams with it's aggressive nature. Chris Mayes broke the school sack record in the process with 18, while Vince Hill (10 sacks) and Deric Brown (7 Sacks) were right on his heels all season. The Linebackers intimidated opposing offenses. Senior AJ Gross ( 106 tackles), Evan Harris (74 tackles), John Gilliard (37 Tackles 4 Sacks) consistently caused havoc in opponents backfields. The secondary combined for 9 INTs this year with David Ingram (6) & Brandon Oredugba (3).

This season was definitely a memorable one and the coaches are excited about next year already!
