Westlake Shuts Down Patuxent 21-13

Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 by Richard Holzer

On November 3, 2006 the Westlake Wolverines took on the Patuxent Panthers for Senior night. The Wolverines moved the ball down the field in the first quarter and got to the 5 yard line on a Darin Moore option run. Unfortunately, the drive was stalled and the Wolverines turned the ball over when they went for it and failed on 4th and goal. The Patuxent Panthers were shut down on their first drive of the game when David Ingram intercepted a pass and gave the ball back to Westlake. The Wolverines Defense yielded no points in the first half. Westlake's offense ran into some misfortune at the end of the first half when Mike Holley caught a Darin Moore pass on the sidelines and appeared to get out-of-bounds. This would have stopped the clock with about 30 seconds remaining.
The referee kept the clock running and the Westlake offense was forced to use their final timeout. The next play forced the Wolverines to run the clock down to 2 seconds for one final play of the half. The attempted fake field goal had a bad handoff and the score at halftime was even at 0-0. The Wolverines received the ball to start the second half and scored right away on an Albert Hanks run. The offensive line, anchored by senior center Rich Fluharty, did a great job of opening holes for the backs in the second half. Good play calling also threw the Patuxent defense off and gave Westlake an advantage. Westlake's defense, along with seniors Vince Hill and Jarron McDavid, held the Panthers to only 13 points in the second half. Two more Westlake scores by Juniors Greg Walker and Jesse Mitchell gave the Wolverines a 21-13 win on Senior night. Westlake travels to Thomas Stone this Friday to play the rival Cougars for the 301 Classic Trophy.
