Westlake Prevails Over Huntingtown 21-20

Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 by Richard Holzer

On Friday, October 27 the Westlake Wolverines took on the Huntingtown Hurricanes for the 2006 Homecoming game. The game was played on a rainy and windy night at Westlake stadium. It was a tough defensive game in the first quarter because both defenses yielded no points. Both offenses had trouble moving the ball in the rain until Westlake scored on an Albert Hanks run. The extra point by Nick Koster gave the Wolverines a 7-0 second quarter lead. After a defensive stop led by seniors A.J. Gross and Chris Mayes, (who had 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble) the Wolverines offense moved the ball down the field again. This drive was capped off by a David Ingram Touchdown reception thrown from quarterback Darin Moore. After a Huntingtown touchdown, the Wolverines went into the halftime leading 13-7. Special teams proved to be a huge factor in the game as the Hurricanes got great field position and put the ball in the end zone. With about 9 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter the Wolverines defense made a big stop to give Westlake's offense a chance to score. They did just that when they scored on a time consuming drive that finished with a touchdown run by Jesse Mitchell (who had 101 yards on 17 carries). The two-point conversion caught by Mitchell on a pass from Moore gave the Wolverines a 21-14 lead with under a minute remaining in the game. The Hurricanes got good field position again on a nice return that got the ball out past mid-field. Huntingtown's quarterback threw a touchdown pass and the visiting Hurricanes were and extra point away from tying the game. The extra point was missed when the kicker hit the upright. Westlake recovered the onsides kick and knelt the ball to preserve a 21-20 win over the Huntingtown Hurricanes on homecoming for the 2006 season. The Wolverines need to get re-focused for their big game this Friday against Patuxent for senior night. Mike Holley and the Wesltake Wolverines will look to avenge their 15-12 loss to Patuxent last year with a win on Senior night
