Westlake Defeats Northern 39-0

Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 by Richard Holzer

On Spetember 9th the Westlake Wolverines traveled to Owings, MD to face the highly touted Northern Patriots. Northern was predicted to be a contender for the SMAC title this year and a spot in the 3A South State Playoffs. Northern proved to be a tough opponent despite the score.

The game opened with a nearly scoreless 1st quarter. Both defenses held strong and turned the offenses back. However, after a three and out by the defense, QB Darrin Moore scampered 20 yards untouched into the end zone.

However, in the second quarter Westlake would blow the game wide open. Westlake had 4 unanswered scores in the second, capped off by a 11 yard Moore to Kenard Harris TD pass. During the second quarter the defense stood tall as well, by recovering 3 fumbles which resulted in 3 Wolverine touchdowns.

The night was capped off by a 47 yard 4th quarter TD run by Derek "Hollywood" Taylor.

The game saw an explosive offensive ground game and smothering defensive play by the Wolverine Defense.

The offense racked up 253 yards on only 26 carries. The defense held SMAC's top running back AJ Brown to 83 yards rushing, while giving up only 140 total yards of defense and pitching a shut out.

This was a total team effort. The Wolverines now look forward to the Leonardtown Raiders next week. Good luck Wolverines!
